About IAD PRESS
IAD Press is an indigenous publisher of excellence whose purpose is to:
• Publish the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander writers and illustrators
• Promote the many and varied voices of Indigenous Australia
• Maintain and promote Indigenous languages and culture
IAD Press fulfills the aims of IAD by publishing high quality works written, edited, illustrated, researched or contributed by Aboriginal people.
IAD Press began in 1972 producing educational material, and over the last 30 years has evolved into a professional publishing house and published it's first dictionary in 1992 which was the Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara to English Dictionary.
As IAD Press has grown, our list of general trade titles has expanded and in 1997 it's trade imprint Jukurrpa Books was launched. Jukurrpa means dreaming, story or law in some Central Australian languages.
IAD Press publishes:
• Language Dictionaries and Learner's Guides
• Indigenous Art
• Oral histories relating to land and culture
• Biographies
• Books for children and young adults
• Fiction
• Poetry and short stories
• Natural histories
IAD Press publications are sold by bookshops all around Australia and the world. Our publications and resources share with communities, families and the wider world the knowledge and experiences of some of the world's oldest surviving cultures. Our publications promote the richness and diversity of those cultures in the spirit of mutal recognition, engagement and respect, and lead in preserving, sharing and reviving Aboriginal languages through their careful documentation.
IAD Press is a not-for-profit organisation and is the publishing arm of the Institute for Aboriginal Development Inc. based in Alice Springs, Central Australia.
For Authors:
IAD Press publishes books by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people which cover all aspects of Indigenous language, art, history and culture. IAD Press sees itself as an important avenue for the promotion of all dimensions of Aboriginality to a national and international readership.
General Submission Guidelines:
IAD Press accepts unsolicited manuscripts from previously unpublished and published Indigenous writers. We prefer to receive submissions on paper (And if requested the manuscript should be made available on disc or via e-mail) Include a one-page synopsis of the manuscript, printed on A4 paper and also a brief bio (something about you and your culture and country, your writing experience, previous publications, work and relevant life details).
Please only send copies of your submission (never send the original or sole copy). IAD Press accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage of unsolicited material received.
An acknowledgement is sent on receipt of the submission and we ask you that you give about 3 to 6 months for us to fully assess the work (this is approximate, and while we try to read your submissions as soon as possible, sometimes it will take longer than expected).

About publishing through IAD Press
If we decide to recommend your manuscript for publication, we prepare a submission to the Board of the Institute for Aboriginal Development for their consideration. Our Board is 100% Aboriginal and is well equipped to bring cultural and community considerations to any decision to publish. IAD Press' submission also presents the Board with information about the marketing (readership) potential of the manuscript, rough estimates of how much it will cost to publish the manuscript and who IAD Press thinks may support the project financially.
If your manuscript is accepted for publication by the IAD Board, then we will make you an offer for publication. If you accept the offer, we then negotiate a publishing contract with you, as well as scheduling the editorial, design and production of your book and its marketing, publicity and distribution.
We make every effort to involve writers and artists in every facet of the publishing process. Our consultations with authors are meaningful and include consideration of copyright attribution, royalty arrangements, protection of intellectual property and your moral rights in the manuscript and the publication. You will also be consulted on the format of the book, the design of the cover and internal pages, the use of illustrations etc.
Getting published may take a long time because we have many projects on the go at any one time and each has its own special and particular demands. It's important to us that we ensure the best quality in everything we produce, so we need to take the time for consultation and checking. It's also important that your book is launched at the right time to reach its audience.
Thankyou for thinking of IAD Press and all the very best with your writing.
